Jewellery Care

Wearing your Jens Hansen Jewellery.

  • Always put your jewellery on last and take it off first.
  • Complete your makeup before putting on your jewellery so that the chemicals in hairspray and makeup won't damage it. It is also a good idea not to sleep in you jewellery as it can cause gradual damage to the piece & poor circulation.
  • Remove your jewellery before doing any housework, gardening or sports activities to prevent the possibility of damage to the piece or the gemstone itself.
  • Avoid exposing your jewellery to harsh chemicals. This includes chlorine in swimming pools & spas, also this can cause your jewellery to become loose increasing the risk of loss.

Storing your Jens Hansen Jewellery.

Store your Jewellery in our soft lined pouch or box. Try to keep pieces apart so they don’t rub together as diamonds will cause abrasion and metals knocking against each other will cause denting.

Cleaning your Jens Hansen Jewellery.

Clean your jewellery regularly, using our home cleaning instructions,  a professional jewellery cleaning product or  dropping it into us or a trusted local jeweller for a professional clean & service.  We recommend that you have your jewellery professionally cleaned & serviced at least once a year.

Home Cleaning Instructions (DO NOT do this in the sink)

* Inspect your jewellery before cleaning, this can be as easy as checking that all the claws are attached, that theres no cracks and that the stone is not loose.

  • Poor a bowlful of warm water, test that the temperature is at a comfortable level as too hot may shock your stones and cause them damage.  Add a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to the water and with a soft tooth brush give your jewellery a once over.  This should remove any dirt from your jewellery. Once its all gone rinse and pat dry.

Daily cleaning can be done with a Jens Hansen cleaning cloth. (do not wash this as it will lose its cleaning agent).  Use the above cleaning instructions at least every three months to prevent build of of grime.

A helpful hint is to remove you jewellery before showering, bathing and washing your hands as the soap with cause a film making your jewellery appear dull and dingy. It can also cause fungal reactions.

Special information about Metals & Stones

Metals

STERLING SILVER

Keep silver jewellery away from harsh chemicals like household cleaning fluids as they create abrasions and reduce the lustre of the metal. Thoroughly dry your silver jewellery after exposure to water.  Tarnishing which may occur as a result of oxidation is caused by the interaction of silver with oxygen or sulphur as well as with certain acids. This is why wearing silver will help it keep its lustre.

GOLD

Keep gold jewellery away from harsh chemicals like household cleaning fluids as they create abrasions and reduce the lustre of the metal. Cleaning gold jewellery is best done with warm water and detergent free soap. Thoroughly dry your jewellery after exposure to water.

PLATED JEWELLERY

This is a thin metal coating on top of a base metal. Use non-abrasive cleaning materials. If a cleaning substance is too strong it may remove the plating.

Do not let your jewellery come into contact with nail polish removers, perfume or hairspray.

Do not wear plated jewellery on a daily basis, that way you will enjoy them for much longer.  Frequently cleaning in a mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water & use of a polishing cloth or strong jewellery cleaner is not recommended.
